February Birds of a Feather 2007

Instructions given are for a single block

There are 12 "Birds of a Feather" blocks in this quilt

The finished sashings are 2 inches wide by 72 ½ inches long and is of the background fabric

You will cut 2 strips that are 2 ½ inches wide by Width of Fabric and then sew them together to make one long strip and cut to 73 inches long, this will go between your second and third row.

For Quilt: You will need 3/8 yard of blue fabric and 3/8 yard of background fabric for the 12 Birds of a Feather blocks.

Using the diagram as your guide, Cut out all block pieces. Take a pencil and draw a line from one corner to the other,on each of the 3 ½” squares of background fabric, see pic. I took a piece of 220 grit sandpaper and glued it to a piece of cardboard (8 ½ by 11) to use for just this purpose. You can get sandpaper at Wal-Mart in your paints section of the store! This way since you are drawing on the bias it won't stretch on you. This is just a suggestion, of course!

Line up your 3 ½ " square on one side of the blue 3 ½ " by 6 ½ "  rectangle and then sew on the drawn line. See pic below. Trim seam to ¼” and then press gently. Line up the other 3 ½ " square on the other side and sew on the drawn line and trim and press your block. Repeat for your other rectangle and press. Sew the two rectangles together using a scant ¼ " seam to form your birds block. For quilt, make 12 of these blocks and sew together making your "row" Each block should measure 6 ½ " by 6 ½ " before sewing into a row for the quilt!
